“Since its inception in 2005, The Fund annually offers a one-time scholarship, the NLK, to the Newburyport High graduating senior who best embodies the essence of Nicole, namely a free spirit and creative vision for his or her life."
Purpose
The NLK Memorial Scholarship Fund (“The Fund”) was created to honor the memory of Nicole Lemieux Knight, a distinguished graduate of Newburyport High School (NHS). Nicole died of breast cancer in 2005, just short of her 37th birthday and three weeks after giving birth to her one and only child, Sophia Lily.
The Fund was established by Nicole’s father, Barry Lemieux, and her brother, Peter Lemieux, at the suggestion of Charmaine McDermott, Nonie Olson and Carolyn Janvrin, three of Nicole’s closest friends and fellow NHS graduates, Class of 1986. The Fund’s endowment is invested and administered by the ECCF (Essex County Community Foundation). More information about ECCF can be found here.
Selection Process
The NLK selection process begins in March. Applicants for The NLK are asked to submit an essay that describes their vision for leading a purposeful life filled with creativity. They also are asked to explain how they would use the proceeds of the award to help fulfill that vision.
Applications are sent to the Selection Committee in April. The award recipient is announced at Senior Scholarship Night usually held in late May.
In addition to the essay, candidates for The NLK are expected to have achieved a strong academic record, displayed leadership in extra-curricular activities, and demonstrated a commitment to pursuing higher education. Special consideration is given to applicants with financial need.
The Selection Committee consists of six individuals. Three are family members, two are Nicole’s former NHS classmates and/or friends and one is a member of the NHS faculty or administration.
